POMS 2010 Convention and Business Meeting

POMS 2010 Convention and Business Meeting
Country Cupboard Inn, Lewisburgh, PA
May 28th – 30th

A section of the gathering listening to the organization’s forum.

POMS 2010 Convention and Business Meeting was truly a rewarding experience. Folks from the United States, Canada, and Guyana gathered at the Country Cupboard Inn in Lewisburgh, Pennsylvania on Guyana’s 44th Independence anniversary to pray, as we customarily do, for the nation of Guyana.

Bro. Freddie Gibbs chatting with Bro. & Sis. George Bruce.

We were blessed to be reunited, after quite a number of years, with Bro. Freddie Gibbs, along with his wife, and other visitors from Canada. We were also joined by Rev. Verne Martin – Director of Christian Education in the Guyana District - who extended her visit to the United States in order to fellowship with us and share news about Guyana.

The messages from Pastors Ronald Williams and Grantley Trotman were well received during the Saturday and Sunday worship services; while Pastor Sherlock Delph officiated at the communion service on Sunday morning.

In response to Sis Verne Martin’s detailed description of the efforts made by the Camp Wesleyana Committee, along with Bro. Albert Bruce’s missionary society, to develop Camp Wesleyana, we were blessed as POMS members and friends willingly committed over $7,000 to the camp’s water supply system.

POMS’ members and guests also shared their thoughts and made recommendations during forums on areas of interest to POMS. We explored ways to promote the scholarship program; suggested several viable productive activities for Camp Wesleyana; promoted collaborative efforts among the youths in Guyana and overseas; and contributed to innovative approaches to POMS use of technology. Documenting the oral history of the Guyana Wesleyan church began in earnest as some took the opportunity to record their history. This effort will continue even after this event as we continue to ensure that the gems among us are not lost as the sun sets on lives called to glory.

The current board members of POMS include, front row, James Sydney, Gloria Vandecruze, Devian Daniels, Kenneth Daniels; back row, Sherlock Delph, Grantley Trotman, Frank Richards, Pastor Ronald Williams (other Board members not in picture-Leonard Lewis,.

Plan to join us next year when we gather to celebrate another Guyana Independence Day in the United States. We encourage the next generation to be integrally involved in POMS activities as we seek to promote efforts to support the church in Guyana.

Members Only

Scholarship Program

The Pilgrim Overseas Missionary Society scholarship program for Guyanese school children began in 2004 when the membership became greatly concerned about the academic preparation children in Guyana. Anecdotal stories of the difficulties children faced to attend and remain in school came to the attention of the membership. After extensive discussions, the executive committee proposed to the body to set up a scholarship program to provide a selected number of these students with annual scholarship. (Read More)

Youth Programs

POMS recognizes that the youths play an important role in the organization and therefore endeavors to develop programs of interest and relevance to them. Pastor Grantley Trotman, the current Youth Representative on POMS Executive Board, recently travelled to Guyana and met with several graduates of the scholarship program to plan and organize these efforts. The result was the creation of Poms Alumni and Beneficiaries Association (PABA) which will seek to fulfill this purpose. This year plans will be implemented to strengthen this relationship.  (Read More)
