About POMS

The Pilgrim Overseas Missionary Society (POMS) is a non-profit organization providing assistance to development projects in Guyana, including providing scholarships for children, and support for reconstructing churches and Christian Camps.

The objectives of the Pilgrim Overseas Missionary Society (POMS) are:

  • To provide financial assistance to the Wesleyan church in Guyana.
  • To provide scholarship awards aimed at keeping children in school.
  • To provide funds to assist in the building and renovations of churches.
  • To assist in the maintenance of Camp Wesleyana.
  • To enhance the mental, physical and spiritual well being of youths attending Camp Wesleyana.

How POMS got started

On January 1, 1982, a group of former Pilgrim Holiness/Wesleyans members, met with District Superintendent and his wife to discuss the possibility of sending aid to needy projects in Guyana.   The heaviest burden on Bro. Millar's heart was to restore the church's camp site which had been vandalized.

On that evening Bro. Millar gave an account of the situation of the church in Guyana then asked that each person give $200 toward this cause.  Pledges were then taken and these totaled $3068.  However Bro. Millar's goal was $4000.  We took into consideration the other people who would like to be part of this venture but for some reason could not be there that night.  There was no doubt in our minds that we could raise the $4000 and perhaps more, in this drive to rebuild Wesleyan.

At this meeting, there were about 28 people.  A discussion evolved and it was suggested that we form ourselves into a permanent group to financially aid not only to rebuild Wesleyan, but also other projects.  A steering committee was then elected to establish this group. At the 1st meeting of the steering committee, the group was given a name hence - "THE PILGRIM OVERSEAS MISSIONARY SOCIETY" (POMS).  Today they are over twenty dedicated members of POMS.

Scholarship Program

The Pilgrim Overseas Missionary Society scholarship program for Guyanese school children began in 2004 when the membership became greatly concerned about the academic preparation children in Guyana. Anecdotal stories of the difficulties children faced to attend and remain in school came to the attention of the membership. After extensive discussions, the executive committee proposed to the body to set up a scholarship program to provide a selected number of these students with annual scholarship. (Read More)

Youth Programs

POMS recognizes that the youths play an important role in the organization and therefore endeavors to develop programs of interest and relevance to them. Pastor Grantley Trotman, the current Youth Representative on POMS Executive Board, recently travelled to Guyana and met with several graduates of the scholarship program to plan and organize these efforts. The result was the creation of Poms Alumni and Beneficiaries Association (PABA) which will seek to fulfill this purpose. This year plans will be implemented to strengthen this relationship.  (Read More)
